I have a 2 associate degrees in engineering, a bachelor's in Information Technology, and a masters in information technology. Generally, when companies write progams, especially commercial companies and Department of Defense contractors, they get paid BIG bucks for producing HIGH quality products at the lowest possible price.
However, this MyHealtheVet program could've been written by my 5 year old nephew. That's how big this bug is. For the security of the system, I will NOT go into any details until the problem has been resolved. However, I would like to mention that when someone finds a HUGE bug like this, he/she should be rewarded for bringing it to the attention of the proper authorities.
I don't really see any real world implications in this bug, after all who would want to wreck havok on a military veterans medical system. That would just be stupid and inhumane. That fact that this is a medical database is probably why the bug has not been discovered and utilized for nefarious purposes. The bug however, is annoying.
I for one, am getting pretty annoyed at the VA. It consistently blames veterans for it's administrative problems. First, there is this HUGE bug in thier computer code. Next, there is a problem that they won't take me seriously about. They keep blaming vets for missing appointments and costing tons of money. However, they won't acknowledge that thier computer system makes appointment for veterans without telling them about the appointments. It's happened to me once, my dad once, and my uncle twice. That's four times in two years in the same family. Statistically speaking, that kind of prevalence, would represent thousands of accidentally computer generated appointments. In my opinion, that's the VA administration's fault, not the vets.
